The Confusion of Keeping it Real

Everyone wants to keep it real today, but I don’t think most people understand what it really means. the meaning has strayed so far from what it really meant that it is no more than a coverup phrase now. A new way to keep it fake. Keep it Real, the phrase came out of the Hip Hop community. What it originally meant was as it stated. Don’t be fake. You don’t have a million dollars. You have 10 dollars. Stop acting like you eat filet mignon every night when you are barely able to afford a quarterpounder meal. Over time Keep it Real has become a shell of itself post adoption of the mainstream. Now it’s used to cover up inconsistencies or changes of opinion. Now, we can just Be Real. What were you before, fake? Keep it Real has gone soft, and I’m not frontin.
